Buhari to launch clean-up of Ogoni land

President Muhammadu Buhari will in the coming weeks launch the clean-up of Ogoni land which has been devastated by oil spills in the last 10 years, destroying farmlands, aquatic life, and unleashing monumental and multiple forms of land, air and water pollutions.
Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed and the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Jubril made the disclosure recently in Rivers and Bayelsa states, during their preparatory mission for the commencement of the clean-up exercise pursuant to the 2011 United Nations Environment programme, UNEP, report on the oil spill in Ogoniland.
Speaking while on a courtesy call on Rivers State Governor Nysom Wike, Mohammed acknowledged the efforts of past administrations in alleviating Environmental Challenges of the Niger Delta, stating that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari would be adopting a comprehensive, robust and sustainable approach.
In his response, Governor Wike expressed his steady support to the Federal Government in efforts in adopting a holistic approach to the clean-up of Ogoniland, adding that his administration will as far as practicable, provide logistic support to facilitate the clean-up project.
While calling on the Ministers to take on board all stakeholders in the clean-up process, the Wike appealed to all parties to set aside partisan politics and support this laudable Federal Government programme in the interest of Nigeria in general, Rivers state and Ogoniland in particular.
