1. Ginger Contains Gingerol, a Substance With Powerful Medicinal Properties

Ginger is a flowering plant that originated from China.

It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, and is closely related to turmeric, cardomon and galangal.

The rhizome (underground part of the stem) is the part commonly used as a spice. It is often called ginger root, or simply ginger.

Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of traditional/alternative medicine. It has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the flu and common cold, to name a few.

 

Ginger can be used fresh, dried, powdered, or as an oil or juice, and is sometimes added to processed foods and cosmetics. It is a very common ingredient in recipes.

The unique fragrance and flavor of ginger come from its natural oils, the most important of which is gingerol.

2. Ginger Can Treat Many Forms of Nausea, Especially Morning Sickness

Ginger appears to be highly effective against nausea (2).

For example, it has a long history of use as a sea sickness remedy, and there is some evidence that it may be as effective as prescription medication (3).

Ginger may also relieve nausea and vomiting after surgery, and in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy (4, 5).

However, ginger had no effect on vomiting episodes in this study.

Although ginger is considered safe, talk to your doctor before taking large amounts if you are pregnant. Some believe that large amounts can raise the risk of miscarriage, but there are currently no studies to support this.

 

3. Ginger May Reduce Muscle Pain and Soreness

Ginger has been shown to be effective against exercise-induced muscle pain.
In one study, consuming 2 grams of ginger per day, for 11 days, significantly reduced muscle pain in people performing elbow exercises (7).
Ginger does not have an immediate impact, but may be effective at reducing the day-to-day progression of muscle pain (8).
These effects are believed to be mediated by the anti-inflammatory properties.

4. The Anti-Inflammatory Effects Can Help With Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common health problem.
It involves degeneration of the joints in the body, leading to symptoms like joint pain and stiffness.
In a controlled trial of 247 people with osteoarthritis of the knee, those who took ginger extract had less pain and required less pain medication (9).
Another study found that a combination of ginger, mastic, cinnamon and sesame oil, can reduce pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis patients when applied topically

5. Ginger May Drastically Lower Blood Sugars and Improve Heart Disease Risk Factors

This area of research is relatively new, but ginger may have powerful anti-diabetic properties.
In a recent 2015 study of 41 participants with type 2 diabetes, 2 grams of ginger powder per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 12% (11).
It also dramatically improved HbA1c (a marker for long-term blood sugar levels), leading to a 10% reduction over a period of 12 weeks.
There was also a 28% reduction in the ApoB/ApoA-I ratio, and a 23% reduction in markers for oxidized lipoproteins. These are both major risk factors for heart disease.

6. Ginger Can Help Treat Chronic Indigestion

Chronic indigestion (dyspepsia) is characterized by recurrent pain and discomfort in the upper part of the stomach.
It is believed that delayed emptying of the stomach is a major driver of indigestion.
Interestingly, ginger has been shown to speed up emptying of the stomach in people with this condition.
After eating soup, ginger reduced the time it took for the stomach to empty from 16 to 12 minutes (12).

7. Ginger Powder May Significantly Reduce Menstrual Pain

Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) refers to pain felt during a woman’s menstrual cycle.

One of the traditional uses of ginger is for pain relief, including menstrual pain.
In one study, 150 women were instructed to take 1 gram of ginger powder per day, for the first 3 days of the menstrual period (14).
Ginger managed to reduce pain as effectively as the drugs mefenamic acid and ibuprofen.

8. Ginger May Lower Cholesterol Levels

High levels of LDL lipoproteins (the “bad” cholesterol) are linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
The foods you eat can have a strong influence on LDL levels.
In a 45-day study of 85 individuals with high cholesterol, 3 grams of ginger powder caused significant reductions in most cholesterol markers (15).
This is supported by a study in hypothyroid rats, where ginger extract lowered LDL cholesterol to a similar extent as the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin (16).
Both studies also showed reductions in total cholesterol and blood triglycerides.

Cancer is a very serious disease that is characterized by uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells.
Ginger extract has been studied as an alternative treatment for several forms of cancer.
The anti-cancer properties are attributed to 6-gingerol, a substance that is found in large amounts in raw ginger (17, 18).
In a study of 30 individuals, 2 grams of ginger extract per day significantly reduced pro-inflammatory signalling molecules in the colon (19).
However, a follow-up study in individuals at a high risk of colon cancer did not confirm these findings (20).
There is some, albeit limited, evidence that ginger may be effective against pancreatic cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. More research is needed (21, 22, 23).

10. Ginger May Improve Brain Function and Protect Against Alzheimer’s Disease

Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation can accelerate the aging process.
They are believed to be among the key drivers of Alzheimer’s disease and age-related cognitive decline.
Some studies in animals suggest that the antioxidants and bioactive compounds in ginger can inhibit inflammatory responses that occur in the brain (24).

A representative of Kelechi Iheanacho has dismissed claims by Nwankwo Kanu that the Manchester City teen sensation was on the books of his academy, Papilo Football Academy, before his shift to the Citizens in 2014.

Kanu proclaimed via social media that Iheanacho came from his academy but the attacker’s adviser has cleared the air, stating that the ex-Arsenal hero was approached by the Man City number 72 to assist him with money to obtain an international passport but rebuffed his advances prior to the 2013 African U-17 Championship.

“Kelechi has nothing to do with Papilo Academy, everyone knows he played for Taye Academy before he moved to Manchester City, it is only a charade, ” Iheanacho’s rep told allnigeriasoccer.com.

“Kanu was supposed to give Kelechi money to process an international passport that will enable him play at the African U-17 Championship but he refused.

Kasımpaşa defender Kenneth Omeruo rejected the opportunity to represent the Nigeria U23s at the 2016 Olympic Games when he was contacted by coach Samson Siasia.

This website earlier reported that the Chelsea loanee’s name was missing from the list of 60 players sent to the Nigeria Football Federation.

“Siasia contacted Omeruo and asked him if he wants to play at the Olympic Games. His answer was negative, so that’s the reason he was dropped ” an official source told allnigeriasoccer.com.

Omeruo has proved a bright spark since he featured for the Nigeria setup at the Fifa Under 17 World Cup and his performance was highlighted when he helped the senior team win the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

When Manchester City confirmed the signing of Raheem Sterling for £49 million, the media publicized the signing in awe of the player, as if Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi had joined the club. The media’s enlightened description of how good a signing Sterling was for City seemed to create an image of Sterling as a world class player even though he isn’t close to it yet.

A month later, Manchester United completed a deal for French teenager Anthony Martial for £36 million. At the time, the media made everyone believe that United was the joke of the transfer market, panic buying 19-year-olds for ridiculous fees. It seemed the writing was on the wall, both figuratively and literally, for Martial and Sterling. Sterling, supposedly a bargain, was the transfer of the summer, and Martial the joke of a player for the joke of a club. Why? Because the media said so. It has been almost nine months since United confirmed the deal to bring Martial in from Monaco, and we now know that the media, not United, is the joke of the football world.

The statistics and the fans of both City and United will be able to agree that, on information from the past two seasons, Martial is the better signing by far. Martial contributes more to all three phases of football, and his 15 goals and nine assists in all competitions are comfortably better than Sterling’s 11 and nine, respectively. Martial is also a year younger and has two years less experience in the Premier League. Once he makes up the time, he is now likely to be one of the best players in the world. He’s been one of the best in the Premier League this season.

Just yesterday, Martial scored the winning goal in the 93rd minute to take Manchester United to the FA Cup final. He claimed an assist for Marouane Fellaini’s opener and gave Everton’s defence countless problems on the day. That isn’t the first time we’ve seen Martial’s potential either. We’ve seen it every week, we’ve seen now 20-year-old Martial carrying Manchester United’s attack through thick and thin. He’s more productive than a player who plays alongside David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, and Sergio Aguero.

If Martial and United win the FA Cup next month, Martial will be loved among United fans regardless of how much he could decline in the coming seasons. Martial will pack his bags and represent France ahead of some of the world’s top attacking talents in June. Can the same be said for Sterling, who has been bested by Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and many other English talents throughout the season?

The fact is, Martial has been the better player, but what one needs to see is the bigger picture. The media creates the image of the football world, and through Martial, we can understand that all the information with which we are fed and all the opinions we develop are based on what is said in the media.

For a second, we were willing to believe that Martial was the biggest flop in Premier League history without watching the Frenchman play a game because the media said he was. Fans were willing to believe that Daley Blind wasn’t a centre-back before Louis van Gaal gave him a chance there. He’s a contender for United’s player of the season awards. Today, Twitter is filled with Louis van Gaal criticism of how poor he’s been for the club. Save for the poor last month of 2015, Manchester United has been statistically one of the best if not the best team in the Premier League since van Gaal’s appointment. He’s also given debuts to 14 youth players, right in line with everything the fans believe in.

Martial has a chance to lead United to a piece of silverware in front of thousands of patriotic fans next month. The catalyst for United in the FA Cup, the 20-year-old will continue to be the man who defied expectations. Martial has not only been the embodiment of United’s hopes for this season, but he’s also taught international football fans not to judge a book by its cover. Perhaps it’s time for United fans and Premier League pundits to make a rational judgement. Martial, a down-to-earth footballer with an eye for goal, is changing the way people see the football media.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Manchester United are ready to authorise a transfer for the Holland international Memphis Depay this summer.

The pacy winger arrived at Old Trafford last July amid much fanfare, following his title-winning final season at PSV Eindhoven.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has again called on the International community to increase its contribution towards the rebuilding of the North East region of Nigeria.
Dogara made the call on Saturday at Bajabure Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp Adamawa State in continuation of his tour of IDP camps across the country, according to a statement issued in Yola by his spokesman, Mr. Turaki Hassan.

 

The Speaker, who donated relief materials to the four IDP camps in Adamawa state, reiterated his call to the international community to help in rebuilding the region that has been ravaged by almost seven years of violence and destruction by the Boko Haram insurgency.

 

Dogara condoled with the people affected by the insurgency and assured them that the current government would not rest until they return home. He also commended the Nigerian security forces for decimating Boko Haram terrorists and recovering territories and communities which were previously under their control. He urged them to push on until all terrorists are routed and displaced persons return to their communities.

 

 

The Speaker maintained that although the region is in dire need of development, peace must first be restored in order to provide the atmosphere for construction to commence. While assuring that as the voices of the people at the national level, the House would continue to draw the attention of the global community to their plight, the Speaker also disclosed that he would soon visit IDP camps in Maiduguri.

"Our decision was that we visit IDPs that are outside the theatre of conflict first and we have visited camps that are outside the North East. This is the first time we are visiting an IDP camp within the North East and hopefully, soon, we will cap this exercise with a visit to IDPs in Maiduguri and close the formal outreach; the rest, we will do in an informal way."

“We recognise the efforts of the military and we thank them for the sacrifice and reclaiming the seven local governments that were captured by Boko Haram. The reason we are here is not just to bring you these relief materials; as a responsible government, we know that the security of lives and properties is our primary purpose and so your security is of more importance than the things we are presenting," the Speaker said.

"Even if we were to keep you here and feed you with the best of food, you will never be satisfied until you return home. That is our priority and we will do everything legally and politically possible to ensure that you get back to your homes very soon."

"As your representatives, we will ensure that we tell your story to the world and we promise – as your voice in the national stage – to tell the world about you. In this era of dwindling resources, it will be difficult for the government to rebuild the region alone. We need the support of the international community. We who wear the shoes know where it pinches most and we are in a better position to tell these stories."

Speaking earlier, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Commission (NEMA), Sani Sidi, disclosed that the camp has 2,903 people, out of whom 1, 338 are children below the age of 13 years, 179 are lactating mothers, with 54 pregnant women and 51 unaccompanied children.

 

 

Receiving the relief materials on behalf of the IDPS, the chairman of the camp, Malam Madu Gana Goni, commended the Speaker for his gesture towards them. He said that as the Speaker rightfully noted, they were eager to return home.

Customs warehouse in Ikeja razed by fire

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nigerian customs service warehouse lost billions of naira due to a fire outbreak. The fire started at 11pm on Friday night April 22nd and burnt into the next day April 23rd. According to a source who witnessed part of the incident, the cause of the fire was an electrical issue from a class room located on the top floor of the warehouse for training officers.

The source said it started from a computer that wasn't switched off properly and sank the decking into the warehouse which caused the fire and caused the loss of billions of naira in goods that were seized by customs.

 

Fire service operators were at the scene but couldn't control the situation due to inadequate water supply.

Fortunately, all gallons of groundnut oil which would have escalated the fire, rice, soap, clothes and some many other items, had previously been moved to IDPs within the last week.

What You Can Eat

That depends on your blood type. Here's what D'Adamo recommends for each type:

Type O blood: A high-protein diet heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables, and light on grains, beans, and dairy. D'Adamo also recommends various supplements to help with tummy troubles and other issues he says people with type O tend to have.

Type A blood: A meat-free diet based on fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, and whole grains -- ideally, organic and fresh, because D'Adamo says people with type A blood have a sensitive immune system.

One study found that adults eating the type A diet showed improved health markers, but this occurred in everyone, not just those with type A blood type. In 2013, a major review concluded that no evidence exists to support benefits of blood type diets.

It's likely that you would lose weight, though, because the diet can be very restrictive.

Is It Good for Certain Conditions?

The Blood Type Diet makes recommendations based solely on your blood type. So, if you have a chronic condition (say, diabetes), you may be told to eat high protein, while another person with diabetes may have to avoid dairy or chicken. This may conflict with your diabetes treatment plan.

The American Diabetes Association recommends a more practical approach to your day-to-day eating. It also cautions against focusing on specific foods. In most cases it doesn't recommend cutting out any major food groups.

The Blood Type Diet also fails to address other conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or cholesterol. Any needed weight loss is sure to have a positive impact on these conditions. But no matter your blood type, you should follow the same guidelines issued by The American Heart Association (AHA) for a low-fat and low-salt diet.

Many people would describe s*x as good, exciting, electrifying and refreshing, especially if done with consent and in a favourable atmosphere.

The benefits identified to be derivable from the exercise include improved immunity through the increase in the levels of immunoglobulin A; reduction of blood pressure; a good form of exercise; reduces pain as well as brings about the release of feel good hormones; reduces stress and the likelihood of prostate cancer in men and improved bladder control in women.

But the question is, How long should good s*x last?

Interestingly, the duration may not really matter in determining whether the benefits would be derived or not, and according to experts, the duration does not even matter when it is done for procreation.

But findings have shown that longer s*xual inter-course does not only boost a man’s ego, it helps him to enjoy the act. While for women, the longer the act, the more the likelihood of them reaching org-asm.

 

According to a study by two scientists, Eric Corty and Jenay Guardiani, from the Pennsylvania State University in the United States, good s*x does not necessarily have to last for hours. In fact, they said it could last for minutes. In their post on Science Daily, they noted that satisfactory s*xual inter-course should actually be between three and 13 minutes.

The researchers involved 50 members of the Society for S*x Therapy and Research in the study, and these members include physicians, nurses, psychologists, marriage and family therapists and social workers who have attended to thousands of patients over several decades.

These participants categorised the time s*x should last, according to experience, into four, namely too short, adequate, desirable and too long, and the measurement of the time starts from the penetration of the vag-ina to the actual ejac-ulation.

The experts categorised s*xual inter-course that lasts between one and two minutes as “too short”. They said if it lasts between three to seven minutes, it is “adequate”, if it is between seven and 13 minutes, it is “desirable” while any ro-mp in the sack that lasts between 15 and 30 minutes is deemed to be “too long.”

The researchers pointed out that some people mistakenly judge their performance or that of their partner by the dictates from the society, and not what is okay for them.

The research said, “A man’s or woman’s interpretation of his or her s*xual functioning as well as the partner’s functioning relies on personal beliefs developed in part from society’s messages; formal and informal. Unfortunately, today’s popular culture has reinforced stereotypes about s*xual activity. Many men and women seem to believe the fantasy model of large pen*ses, rock-hard erec-tions and all-night-long inter-course.”

Corty, who is an associate professor of psychology, said their survey would help to rekindle people’s confidence in themselves and trim down on their fantasies, noting that the situation at hand had made people to have unrealistic expectations.

He added, “This seems a situation ripe for disappointment and dissatisfaction. With this survey, we hope to dispel such fantasies and encourage men and women with realistic data about acceptable s*xual inter-course, thus preventing s*xual disappointments and dysfunctions.

“Also, if a patient is concerned about how long intercourse should last, these data can help shift the patient away from a concern about physical disorders and to be initially treated with counselling, instead of medicine.”

The goal of s*x is for both partners to be satisfied, such that they would reach org-asm. Regardless of the time it takes, as long as both parties are satisfied, the deed had been done.
